Bargaining Update - GSBC update #24
GOA members deliver a 90.1% strike mandate!
Your Government Services Bargaining Committee thanks every member who participated in this crucial vote. 80% of you voted to make sure your voice was heard loud and clear. Congratulations in keeping our union democracy strong!
The results are in. We have provided these results to the Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) which is supervising the vote. The ALRB is still required to verify these results and provide confirmation. However, we feel confident in the accuracy of the results: GOA members have voted 90.1% in favour of strike action!
You have made your voices heard. Historically, strong strike mandates are a powerful tool to bring most employers back to the bargaining table. However, we are currently dealing with an employer that has proven to be particularly uncooperative throughout this process. Recently, the Government of Alberta’s spokesperson dismissed our position as ‘rhetoric,’ despite the fact that we are advocating for wages that reflect the real inflation affecting our province.
It is essential to understand that our demands are grounded in achieving fair compensation that acknowledges the economic realities faced by our members. We remain steadfast in our commitment to good faith negotiations and will continue to push for an equitable agreement. We call on the government to move beyond dismissive rhetoric and engage constructively with us to secure a fair and sustainable outcome.
Next steps
Going on strike is not a certainty. Our strike vote is valid for the next 120 days, but your bargaining committee’s primary focus is reaching a good deal at the bargaining table.
We will send you an update as information becomes available.
